Welcome to Bourne

The peaceful and serene entryway to the whole of Cape Cod.

Situated on the western entrance to Cape Cod, the community of Bourne serves as the official welcoming point for those heading to the Cape. Consisting of nine villages, Bourne stretches out to both sides of the Cape Cod Canal. This quiet community offers both active and leisurely recreation options, a plethora of old-timey businesses, and quaint seaside cottages available for those looking to make their move to the Cape a more permanent one. While Bourne may appear quiet at first glance, it is one of Cape Cod‘s hidden gems where both longtime residents and newcomers can enjoy old-fashioned coastal pleasures.

What to Love

  • The first community on your way into Cape Cod, making it an easy trip
  • Great sense of community thanks to friendly neighbors, several local events, and a busy social calendar
  • Wide variety of quintessential New England eats (Lobster Trap, Chart Room, Daily Brew)
  • Comprises historic villages like Cataumet, Pocasset, Monument Beach, and Gray Gables

Local Lifestyle

Those living in Bourne live a peaceful Cape Cod vacation lifestyle day in and day out. The Cape Cod Canal offers an array of recreation options and special events throughout the year. For one, you can enjoy a walk or jog along the Cape Cod Canal Bikeway. The area is also ideal for birdwatching, picnicking, boating, fishing, and capturing some of the most Instagrammable photos on the Cape. Being the westernmost community on Cape Cod, Bourne locals are afforded easy access to inland Massachusetts, making it a particularly easy destination for those driving in from Providence or Boston.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

This quiet gateway boasts a prominent culinary scene. Some of the best seafood in the world can be found in New England and specifically, Cape Cod. Bourne is in no shortage of options, with various establishments across all price points being available to the community.

One more laid-back option is The Lobster Trap, established in 1969. There is hardly any better place to enjoy raw bar staples, clam chowder, lobster rolls, steamed fish, and other New England specialties. In addition to dining in, patrons also have the option to shop their fish market featuring fresh catches right from the Bay, perfect for a special night in.

For dinner with a view, The Chart Room offers one of the best options in town. Positioned on the waterfront, this seasonal eatery features lobster prepared in many ways, crab cakes, clams, steamers, and so much more, all of which are best enjoyed with a sunset view of the harbor and cold drink in hand.

Another comforting spot to enjoy the weekend, the end of a long day, or even a simple weekday afternoon is The Courtyard Restaurant & Pub. The Courtyard serves the best in regional comfort and seafood, in addition to brick oven pizza and ice-cold concoctions from their full bar, best enjoyed on their outdoor patio beneath a warm arrangement of twinkling string lights.

If you’ve got guests to entertain during the daytime, or if you want a remote work hangout with great coffee, go to the Daily Brew. In addition to great coffee, they serve breakfast and lunch items. Who knows — you might walk out having bought local artwork the place displays.

Things to Do

A historic community offers a great deal of opportunities for locals to learn about and appreciate local history, which is not something very common in vacation spots. The Museums at Aptucxet is situated on 12 acres and home to the old postal station, railroad stop, and a replica of the old trading post. Nearby, the Massachusetts State Cemetery is a military cemetery serving as the last resting spot for some of the state's most notable men, women, and war heroes, a must-see for history buffs. The village of Grey Gables was named after the estate where U.S. President Grover Cleveland summered during his second term in office, from 1893 to 1896.
